The Book of Kells holds a unique place in history. Its wealth of Hiberno-Saxon illumination is extraordinary. The large manuscript of the four Gospels was probably written and illuminated on the Isle of Iona in the early 9th century. After a series of Viking raids, the monks fled the monastery in AD 807. They took the unfinished manuscript with them to the monastery of Kells, in County Meath, Ireland, where it was finished.

This cross is inspired by a design found in The Book of Kells and is the combined design efforts of Deanne and Byron McKeown. It is traditionally cast in bronze.
