The design for this cross is inspired by bas-relief carvings that detail the nave of the Church of Sts. Peter and Paul in the North Beach district of San Francisco. This church was founded by the Salesian order which is the 3rd largest order in the Catholic Church. Based on a dedication of  service to youth and family, the order was founded in the 19th century in the Piedmont area of northwest Italy by St. John Bosco. John Bosco, Italian in full San Giovanni Melchior Bosco, byname Don Bosco, (born August 16, 1815, Becchi, near Turin, Italy, died January 31, 1888. He was canonized April 1, 1934 and his feast day January 31. He was a pioneer in educating the poor and founded the Salesian order.

Bosco had been popularly known as the patron saint of illusionists. On 30 January 2002, Silvio Mantelli petitioned Pope John Paul II to declare Bosco formally to the patron of stage magicians.
