In late medieval Christianity,  St. Michael, together with Saint George, became the patron saint of chivalry and is now also considered the patron saint of police officers, paramedics and the military. Saint Michael has four main roles or offices. His first role is the leader of the Army of God and the leader of heaven's forces in their triumph over the powers of hell. He is viewed as the angelic model for the virtues of the "spiritual warrior".

This cross combines Spanish and indigenous design influences. The design was drawn from various architectural motifs seen in the town of of San Miguel Allende, Mexico. It was founded by Franciscan monks in 1542   and was an important stopover on the Antiguo Camino Real, part of the silver route from the plains of Zacatecas. It was declared a national historic monument in 1926 and as a result, the center of the city still retains much of its beautiful Spanish Colonial architecture such as, La Parroquia, the cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel.
